Innovative Transformation - III

‘Innovative transformation’ the word in itself is self explanatory of how transforming a structure or giving it a new identity without changing its integral system can be a challenging task. This house in Pimpri-Chinchwad is a home to a six member family representing their three generations. The client wished to transform it into a new home/office catering the needs of specific and individual spaces as per their growing family. The family would live together under one roof, yet each unit would enjoy its individual space, privacy, and freedom.

The transformation was planned in such a way that it retains most of the structural elements with less demolition and addition of a lift & new floor. The outcome would not resemble the old design in any manner. Despite the client’s initial desire to demolish the existing structure and build anew. Instead the proposal suggested that to retain most structural systems. In effect, it amounted to the 'regeneration' of an old property, in the process saving the client considerable project cost and considerable carbon footprint. It also significantly reduced the project timeline by streamlining permissions, excavations, and the construction of new RCC frame structure.

We envisaged five floors, each floor serving a different purpose: The ground floor for parking and gathering, on the first floor for office space and the upper 3 floors for the client's family. Although a challenging task, we could design it successfully and, more importantly, to the complete satisfaction of the client. Due to lift the spatial organization of the house was changed in such a way that all the common areas were positioned on the top floor allowing the user to enjoy the great views of the huge garden. The floors of the house have been designed in such a way that both common areas and private areas co-exist without intertwining each other's privacy.
